Five students out of ten from St. Catherine of Siena School received Honorable Mention awards for their science projects in the Region V Science Fair held at Regis College the first week of May and will go on to compete in the Massachusetts State Middle School Science and Engineering Fair in Worcester in late June. These results are especially impressive because this is the first time St. Catherine of Siena School had entrants in the Region V Science Fair which includes all middle and high schools in southeastern Massachusetts and all Boston parochial and private schools. Through presenting at school, regional, and state science fairs, St. Catherine School students are not only investigating real world science and engineering problems, but they are also learning about the many exciting and emerging fields of science and technology today; and building important life skills, from reading, writing and math to communications, teamwork and design. Special congratulations to SCS awardees who will represent St. Catherine’s in Worcester: Nicholas Chehwan with his project on “Citrus Power,” the effect fruit has on the conduction of electricity; Ava Ekberg with her project on extracting DNA from fruit called “A Fruity Find”; Meredith Blaise and Brittany Christopher with their team project entitled “Liar, Liar” demonstrating how a lie detector determines if someone is lying or not; and Chloe Byrne with her project on “Squirmy Wormies” where they are used together with other substances to affect plant growth. Congratulations also to other St. Catherine’s entrants who placed in the school’s annual science fair: James Rosales, Erica MacSweeney, Sanaya Panthaki, Daisha Joseph, Joseph Flinn, and Noreen Timmoney. Special thanks to their teachers Sister Jeanne Morris and Sean Regan, who served as mentors and guides as they prepared students for the event. Each year students in Grades 6 through 8 prepare and present with each class their topic and experiment in their Science class and for the parents and the general school community.
