Hamilton police say they are investigating “concerning statements” that were posted to Facebook by a graduate on Thursday.

“They were very general,” said Lt. Scott Janes. “They were not specific to anyone.”

The statements were first reported to high school administrators, according to a phone and e-mail message sent to high school parents by Assistant High School Principal Bryan Menegoni at about noon on Thursday.

“As a precautionary step, the high school and middle school administration, in conjunction with the Hamilton police department, immediately ensured the safety of the students on campus,” Menegoni said in his message.

Menegoni also said that the former student is safe and “and that there are no safety concerns to the school and community whatsoever.”

Janes said in an interview that the comments were not directed toward the school. Police did not say where the former student, who police did not identify, was located. The statements are under investigation “to see if there is a criminal element,” Janes said.

Menegoni’s message said the comments were from a “former student” and Janes said that the person is a Regional graduate.

The case was under investigation by Sgt. Stephen Trepanier.

“We do not see a threat to the community at this time,” Janes said.

Police went to the school after the statements were reported, Janes said, and the school followed its procedures. Janes didn’t know whether classes were interrupted.

Interim High School Principal John Hughes directed inquiries about the incident to Interim Superintendent Peter Gray. Gray was not available to comment on Thursday afternoon, according to staff in his office, because he was working on a budget presentation for the School Committee on Thursday night.
