BELOW IS JUST ONE OF THE GREAT REVIEWS STAGE 284’s MARY POPPINS PRODUCTION HAS RECEIVED:
Mary Poppins Takes Flight
Stage 284’s opening production of the iconic Mary Poppins under their new name could not have made a better choice. Here in this intimate setting, the show receives a new kind of magic. Myriam Cyr and Jay Pension’s production of Mary Poppins written by Pamela Lyndon Travers renewed my faith in a young vibrant theater community. The production was stunning on multiple levels and yet relied on only a handful of professional actors that included almost 40 amateurs of which children as young as 6 who played the Penguins in the Park. The rousing, standing ovation says it all but here are a few notes in case you’re still debating whether to attend.
Mary Poppins, (played superbly by Jocelyn Duford), conveyed the practically perfect nanny to perfection. Her lovely voice, lively dance moves and energetic sword (umbrella) fighting all created the wonderful Mary Poppins we know and love. Ms. Duford’s interpretation of Mary Poppins was as good if not better, than the amazing Julie Andrews. With her button-shoed feet splayed out and her no nonsense orders to her charges. Ms. Duford brought character, love and humor to every move she made. Her expressions were priceless.
John Manning makes Bert, an irrepressible street merchant who wins your heart from the get go. Delightful and joyous, you wish you were atop the roof tops of London in his company. Jenny Dale, (the wicked nanny, Miss Andrews) rocks the stage with her powerful, humorous and frightening performance. The ultimate confrontation between the two nannies finishes with a battle of the umbrellas that is one of the many highlights of this magical evening.
But if the professional actors were terrific, their supporting cast members were equally brilliant in their own right. Every single actor was professional to the core. Mike Fay and Patricia Jamieson brought depth and feeling to their parts. The children, Anabelle Johnson e and Myles Kercher were charming and Kellie Levitt as Mrs. Brill was very funny.
Cyr and Pension bring charm, effective and deft inventiveness to the staging. “Sweeps” move giant children’s blocks swiftly spelling settings to tell us where we are… park, kitchen, bedroom, etc. The sweeps transform into a human cupboard, a faucet, toy soldiers and provide much of the magic during the evening. They dance and sing whenever the occasion calls for it and makes the complex set changes fast and enjoyable. David Bull (the Grand David) provides elegant and mesmerizing moments of magic throughout the evening. Nate Punches set provides two levels to the theater creating the roof tops of London and his ingenious use of a scrim allows an ingenious solution to Mary Poppins flight.
When you see the play you will believe in magic all over again. There’s this scene where…… oops---you’ll have to go to the play to see what I mean. Certainly magic is happening at The Community House. Directed with true Mary Poppins flair by Myriam Cyr and Jay Pension a most wonderful, and cheerful evening!
