Hingham Officer Honored For Assisting Veteran in Need

Hingham Police Officer Jeffrey Kilroy was recognized this month by the Hingham Veteran’s Council for his assistance in going above and beyond to help a local Afghanistan War veteran.

Hingham Veterans’ Services Director Keith Jermyn presented Kilroy  with the Town of Hingham Veteran’s Council Recognition Award, which reads “In grateful recognition of his compassion, creativity, and resourcefulness in bringing timely and effective support to bear for a veteran in need.”

Out of respect for his privacy of the Veteran, the Hingham Police Department did not go into detail about the incident but did say they were very proud of Kilroy's work and Police Chief Michael Peraino was at the seminar to honor his officer.

“We are proud of him and of the relationship we have worked to establish with the Hingham Veteran's Council and its Director, Keith Jermyn,” Hingham Police Sgt. Steven Dearth said.

Kilroy, who joined the Hingham Police Officer in 2005,  was recognized at the First Responders seminar, which was held on February 12.

The seminar was designed to bring awareness of the needs of Veterans returning from conflicts, and how municipalities can and should be getting ready to deal with their unique issues.

The program also discussed the psychological and social stressors endured by service members.

Officer Kilroy’s father, James Kilroy is a U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran, 4th Infantry Division, 1/10th Armored Calvary Division, who served from 1968-1970.

Mr. Kilroy  was able to attend the seminar and was proud to see his son honored.

“As a father and Veteran I couldn’t be more proud to see my son recognized for his compassion for reaching out to help a young Veteran”  Kilroy told the police deprtment.

Officer Kilroy is assigned to the Traffic Division and is also a member of the METRO-LEC SWAT team.
