Faulkner May Sponsor JP Hubway Station

Boston’s Hubway bike-sharing system soared in popularity in its second year, and though there is no station in Jamaica Plain yet, there could be one coming soon.

Brigham & Women’s Faulkner Hospital is “very interested” in sponsoring a Jamaica Plain Hubway station, Jamaica Plain Business and Professional Association member Michael Reiskind said at a Wednesday meeting.

David Goldberg, director of marketing and public affairs for Faulkner, confirmed the hospital's interest via email.

"Yes, we are interested in sponsoring a Hubway station in JP," Goldberg wrote. "Admittedly, we don't know too much about it and are looking into it a bit further but one of our goals for the future is to be a bit more proactive in supporting local, healthy community partners and we thought that idea had some good possibilities."

A sponsor must commit $50,000 per year for three years to sponsor a Hubway location, Reiskind said at the meeting.

Brad Brown, president of the Jamaica Plain Business and Professional Association, said at the meeting he did not know whether this would mean a station would be placed near Faulkner's location - 1153 Centre St. - in Forest Hills.

Jamaica Plain would benefit from having two stations as opposed to just one because there is a maximum time limit on which one can ride a Hubway bicycle before additional charges are triggered, Brown said. The closest planned station to JP for the upcoming riding season is at Roxbury Crossing, according to a Hubway stations map.

The Hubway will begin to open stations in spring, weather permitting.
