School vacation week is a chance to check out local libraries, museums, shops and activities with the kids.

Many families head for the slopes or sand during February Vacation week, but for those staycationing next week, there are plenty of entertainment and enrichment options in and around Lexington.

Skatin' at Hayden: The Hayden Recreation Center is hosting exhibitions on the first and last days of the vacation week. On Saturday, Feb. 18, Lexington-Bedford Youth Hockey will host “Try Hockey for Free,” a trial program USA Hockey and the Boston Bruins are offering a for children under 8 who are interested in trying hockey for the first time. The free event will be held from 11:50 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. Pre-register at  www.TryHockeyForFree.com. And on Sunday, Feb. 26, the Hayden Synchronized Skating Teams will put on a free exhibition from 6 to 7:30 p.m. In addition, there are gym and pool programs throughout the week and the Hayden Penny Carnival on Thursday afternoon.

Check out Cary Library: Though it's closed for the holiday Monday, Cary Memorial Library has plenty of vacation week programming including the Pumpernickel Puppets on Tuesday, music and movement and tales told by teens on Wednesday and family crafts for everyone on Thursday.

Stroll through the Center: No plan is needed for an enjoyable afternoon in downtown Lexington. Whether it's a satisfying the sweet tooth at Candy Castle, taking in a class at Sweet Beads, grabbing lunch at Mario's, checking out the Another Brush with Polymer exhibit at Lexington Arts and Crafts Society or sitting down for a frozen snack at Ranc's.

Trains and more at the National Heritage Museum: There's an Ntrak Model Train Show this Saturday and Sunday at the National Heritage Museum. During its regular hours, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Satudays, the museum also is showing exhibitions on Lexington and the Revolution, National Parks and American Masonic Regalia .

Just out of town: On Monday evening in Bedford, “ Shut Up about Your Perfect Kid," a program about raising children with disabilitie by sisters Gina Gallagher and Patricia Konjola, will be presented at the Elm Brook Place Clubhouse. The Banff Mountain Film Festival 2012 stops in Arlington this Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The Boston Children's Museum has a whole lineup of vacation week activities, as does the MFA.
