Lynnfielder was volunteer deputy fire chief and parks and cemetery commissioner, helped institute town's flag day program.

Donald Ross Of Lynnfield Dies At 77

Donald R. Ross, 77 of Lynnfield, Massachusetts died Friday, June 22, 2012 in Highland Beach Florida after a courageous 3 year battle with liver cancer. He was born December 26th, 1934 in Lynn, Massachusetts, the son of the late Herbert L. Ross and Gertrude M. Ross (Buchanan). He was raised in Lynnfield, MA and graduated from Lynn Tech. He served in the Navy Reserves for 8 years after graduation.

At age 15, he started his own painting business, which would later become Donald R. Ross Painting and Decorating Contractor. He would be joined in business with his son Darren, who took over the business in 2001. Mr. Ross had been a prominent member of the National Painting and Decorating Contractors of America (P.D.C.A.) for over 51 years, and served as a board member for 17 years. He had served as the President of both the Northshore/Merrimack Valley Chapters and of the New England Regional Chapter of PDCA. In 2003, he was awarded National Honorary Life Membership to the organization and received the National PDCA Distinguished Service Award. Don was recognized nationally as one of the leading residential painting contractors in the country and had been featured on the cover of several national magazines. He was also the inventor of the Wedgevent System, a moisture release device he developed and patented, of which he was very proud.

Don was an active member of the Lynnfield Community, having served as Volunteer Deputy Fire Chief, and Parks & Cemetery Commissioner. He helped institute the Flag Day Program in Lynnfield, and was a member of both the Lynnfield Ctr. Golf Club study committee and the municipal land acquisition committee. He will be fondly remembered by hundreds of Lynnfield residents as the jolly Santa Claus who visited the elementary schools during the holidays. He was a member of the Lions Club, the PDCA Advisory Board, Lynn Voc. Tech Institute and Couples Club.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dorothy F. Ross (Landry), 2 children, son Darren Ross and his wife Traci of Lynnfield, and their children Alexandra and Jack; and daughter Darleen Ross Smith and her husband David, of Lee, NH and their two children, Zachary and Zoe. He is also survived by a sister Margaret (Margo) Ross of Nashua, NH, a brother David and his wife Lillian of Lynnfield, a brother-in-law Paul Landry and his wife Sissy of Sandown, NH, and a sister-in-law, Elaine Ross, wife of the late Herbert Ross, Jr. He was predeceased by brothers Lawrence of Hawaii, Robert of Saugus, MA and Herbert Ross Jr. of Lynnfield, and sisters Mildred Palleschi of Peabody and Beatrice Sullivan of Pennsylvannia.

He spent his final years with his best friend Dorothy, in his favorite 3 places – Lynnfield, Highland Beach and Bridgton, Maine enjoying his huge circle of family and friends, and relishing the love of Alex, Jack, Zach and Zoe.

His funeral will be held from the SOLIMINE, LANDERGAN AND RICHARDSON FUNERAL HOME, 426 Broadway, Lynn on Saturday, June 30th at 9:00 am followed by a 10:00 am funeral Mass at St. Maria Goretti Church in Lynnfield. Burial in Forest Hills Cemetery, Lynnfield. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home on Friday, June 29th from 4 to 8 pm..
