Man Fabricated Story About Racial Remarks at Malden Bus Station: Police

Chief Kevin Molis said a man admitted to making up a story about hearing racist remarks and being told he was in "Trump country."

MALDEN, MA – Malden police said Wednesday a man fabricated a story about being the victim of racist comments at a Malden bus station.

According to Malden Police Chief Kevin Molis, a 20-year-old man told police he was leaving an MBTA bus in the area of Broadway Square around 10 p.m. Tuesday night when he was followed by at least two white males. He said the men used a racist slur, made a reference to lynching and mentioned that he was now in "Trump country," according to police.

He told authorities he was able to escape the men by fleeing and hiding.

When police interviewed the man a second time, he admitted he made up the story to raise awareness about "things that are going on around the country," Molis said in a statement. Molis said the man was made aware of the possible legal consequences of his false statement and the damage it could do to the community.
