Driver Killed in Mansfield Car Fire

Police say a vehicle struck a tree before the fire began.

MANSFIELD, MA — A driver has died following an early Sunday morning car fire in Mansfield

At about 2:19 a.m, police received a 911 call reporting a car on fire in the woods near North Main and Dane Streets, according to the Mansfield Police Department. Police at the scene found a vehicle fully engulfed in flames.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the vehicle failed to negotiate a bend in the road and struck a large tree. The driver, who was the only person inside the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not released the driver's identity.

The road was closed for about 4-1/2 hours.

The crash remains under investigation by Mansfield Detective Sergeant Lawrence Crosman, Detective Boldrighini, Accident Reconstruction Officer David Kinahan, and state police.
