OPINION: Homemade Sausage and Large Portions at Stephen Anthony's

This weekend, consider treating yourself to brunch at Stephen Anthony's.

OPINION: Homemade Sausage and Large Portions at Stephen Anthony's

Restaurant is not what one would refer to as a hip brunch spot. The large one dining room looks as if a small army of grandmas decorated it — the chair and booth cushions are floral, drawings and photos documenting life in the early 1900s line the walls. Yet the atmosphere is one of comfort, and peacefulness if folks are able to snag one of the tables overlooking the pond and woods.

Although the restaurant does serve lunch and dinner, breakfast/brunch seems to draw the large crowds. According to the staff, if you want to beat the Sunday rush, arrive before 10 a.m. And it’s easy to see what lures folks to the establishment. Portions are large and tasty, and prices are reasonable.

If you enjoy sausage, don’t miss Stephen Anthony’s homemade sausage. The chef rotates between four to five different varieties, but customers can always rely on the maple sausage being available, noted one server. The side portion of the sweet, flattened maple sausage is large enough to be shared around the table.

Ordering the blueberry pancakes, an order of hash browns and an order of sausage is more than enough for two people ($17). A respectable amount of fresh, plump blueberries are mixed throughout, rather than placed atop the pancakes.

And here the hash browns are of the variety found throughout the South – shredded, pan-fried potatoes. If eaten plain, they will taste bland. The key to delicious hash browns is to ask to have them “smothered and covered” (borrowed terminology from the famous southern chain Waffle House). This phrase translates to adding onions and melted cheese atop the hash browns.

The menu offers everything one might crave for brunch, from omelets and Belgium waffles to steak and eggs and range of hearty breakfast sandwiches. Check out their website to view the menus. Stephen Anthony’s is located at 999 Boston Post Road, Marlborough.
