Sweats for Vets, a local non-profit that serves homeless veterans in both Worcester and Boston recently completed another successful year. The organization accepts Boston sports team sweatshirts as donations, wraps them all, and distributes them at Vets, Inc. of Worcester on Christmas Eve, and the New England Center for Homeless Veterans of Boston on Christmas Day. Close to 400 brand new sweatshirts were distributed during this holiday season.
Mark Vital, who teaches and coaches at the Advanced Math and Science Academy (AMSA), acts as the organization’s president. Many of the staff and families at AMSA helped the organization to reach its goal. In addition to sweatshirts, Vital’s students also collected over 500 smaller gifts (gloves, hats and wool socks) to distribute to the homeless veterans in Worcester.
The generosity of many organizations made it possible for Sweats for Vets to reach its annual goal. The following organizations from Marlborough made donations to the organization: Marlborough’s Veterans Council, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, Italian American War Veterans, and the Police Patrol Officers Association. Representative Gregoire and Counselor Oram also contributed greatly to the organization. Of local note, Finnegan’s Pub of Hudson held two fundraising events and raised 100 sweats!
Vital exclaims, "The organization is trying to increase its numbers from 400 to 500 sweatshirts next year in order to help homeless veterans across the entire state.” Donations can be made year round at www.sweats4vets.com or by contacting Vital at firstname.lastname@example.org.
