A valid library card allows you to use a variety of free library services. Our column highlights what you can get for nothing.

All those town residents behind the 400,000 library visits must be on to something. This week, hearing that the is now recording that number of visits a year, and counting, we decided to investigate what is available for free at the library.

All that is required to take advantage of these suggestions is a valid library card.

1 Freebie One:  Unlike many libraries, Milford Town Library allows its patrons to check out popular magazines for one week. The only caveat is you can't take the current issue. But back issues are available and ready. The library has popular titles, ranging from Rolling Stone to Vogue to the New York Times Magazine.

2. Freebie Two:  A station of computers is available if you don't have internet access at home. But beyond that, the library offers its card holders free access from any computer to a variety of databases, including ancestry.com and infotrac, a database of text articles published in newspapers and magazines.

3. Freebie Three:  Free movies on DVD is a big draw, perhaps one of the most popular features of the library. Many cities and towns charge a small fee to rent DVDs. Not here. You can check them out for one week, or three weeks if you're checking out a multi-disk television series.

4. Freebie Four: Let's not forget the books. The library has a full selection of popular titles in nonfiction, fiction, poetry, drama, self-help, you name it. And soon, the summer reading titles for Milford teens and children will be stocked and displayed. Books can be checked out for three weeks at a time.

5. Freebie Five: Free CDs in a range of genres. The popular musicians whose works are available at the library include Beyonce, Elvis Costello and Johnny Cash. The library also has an extensive selection of classical CDs.
