Needham Schools Closed Monday Because of Hurricane Sandy

A decision on Town Meeting will be made by noon.

Needham Schools Closed Monday Because of Hurricane Sandy

Needham Public Schools will be closed on Monday, Oct. 29 as the town prepares for Hurricane Sandy to descend with heavy rain and winds.

An announcement posted on the school website over the weekend stated, "Due to the impending storm, all schools are closed and all school activities are cancelled for Monday."

Updated weather forecasts on Sunday showed Hurricane Sandy arriving in the greater Boston area before the Monday morning commute, with  high wind and flood watches in effect from Monday morning through around 2 a.m. Tuesday.

An updated announcement on the Town of Needham website said officials will make a decision by noon on Monday whether or not to hold the special Town Meeting, which is currently scheduled to go on at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Town Hall.

Also related to the storm, the town's Department of Public Works posted an announcement on the town website over the weekend asking residents to help clear catch basins near their homes in preparation for the heavy rains.

The announcements stated: "To prevent the potential of flooding during Hurricane Sandy, the Water & Sewer Division is requesting residents to assist the DPW in keeping catch basins that are in proximity of your homes clear of any leaves or debris."

Residents with questions or concerns about the issue can call the DPW Water and Sewer Division at 781-455-7550.

Needham Patch will continue to provide updates on local closings and alerts as information becomes available. Know of something that has been canceled or postponed because of Hurricane Sandy? Send a tip to becca.manning@patch.com.
