On September 11, 2001, twelve Needham First Responders rushed to New York City in response to the attacks on the World Trade Center. These men spent many days working side-by-side with other first responders at ground zero. The impact was profound and immeasurable. Each year on September 11th, the Needham Police and Fire Departments pay tribute to the men and women who answered the call to action and to those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
The Needham 9/11 Memorial Committee was established to design and erect a memorial to honor those First Responders including some of our own Needham personnel. This new 9/11 Memorial for First Responders, to be located outside of the Needham Police & Fire Stations, will be a respectful tribute and will provide a permanent place for the annual September 11th ceremony by the Needham Police and Fire Departments.
Recently, the Needham Police and Fire Departments obtained a steel beam artifact from one of the World Trade Center buildings. This pitted and scarred piece of steel is approximately one foot square and will be the centerpiece of the 9/11 Memorial for First Responders.
