Newton Student Punished for Pro-Democracy Writings at Chinese School

A Newton North High School senior was banned from prom after he wrote pro-democracy messages while on a study abroad trip.

Henry DeGroot said he wrote the messages in the notebook of a Chinese student at a school near Beijing, the Boston Globe reported.

DeGroot said he wrote the following messages:

  • "Democracy is for cool kids"
  • "Don’t believe the lies your school and government tell you"
  • "It’s right to rebel”
School officials said he violated school policy by embarrassing the Chinese school. DeGroot disagrees with the punishment because he believes what he wrote should be considered free speech.
