Photo Gallery: Firefighters Perfect Cold-Temperature Skills

Newton firefighters had an ice rescue drill yesterday in Crystal Lake.

Although the pressures and situations firefighters face are often in high-temperatures, it is crucial they also know what to do when those temperatures hit freezing.

The held an ice rescue drill yesterday in Crystal Lake, taking turns sliding across the frozen lake, jumping into the frigid water and rescuing colleagues acting as victims.

After a hole is cut in the ice, the men practice attaching ropes and carabiners to the "victim" as well as hone skills on how to get out of the water themselves.

And it's a good thing they got some practice in -- according to scanner reports early Thursday morning, the Fire Department successfully rescued a dog that had fallen through the ice off Nonantum Road.
