A North Reading man was charged with theft after he allegedly stole $9,000 while posing as a Sears employee in Nashua, NH.

On Jan. 31, members of the Nashua Police Department Uniform Field Operations Division arrested Steven Smith, 36, of 7 Greenbriar Drive #302, North Reading, on a warrant for theft by deception, a Class A felony. Smith was arrested at the Nashua Police Department at approximately 3:40 p.m.

The arrest was made following an investigation into an incident that occurred on Jan. 18, when Nashua Police were called to Sears at 310 Daniel Webster Highway for the report of a theft. They learned that Smith had portrayed himself as a Sears employee and obtained $9,000 in cash from the victim in exchange for what he thought were 10 65-inch televisions.

The investigation was furthered by detectives in the Criminal Investigation Division and a warrant was issued for Smith. He was released on $1,000 cash/surety bail and will be arraigned in Nashua Circuit Court on Feb. 14.
