The Eagle-Tribune identified the passenger as Gerard Letendre, 53, of 7 Olde Farm Lane, North Reading. The Eagle-Tribune also reported Jenkins was driving his 1965 Chevrolet Corvette during the crash.

Jenkins was charged with OUI and carrying a gun while drunk. Police he had his own handgun inside the vehicle.

Jenkins, a member of the gang unit, has been with State Police for 14 years.

State Police said they will continue to monitor his case and "re-assess his duty status when appropriate to do so."

"State Police condemn all instances of impaired operation," Col. Timothy Allen said in a statement.
