The Flint Memorial Library is pleased to announce the title selected for North Reading Reads 2014, the 11th annual community reading program: Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter, a novel of love, big dreams, responsibility, and the movies. The author, Jess Walter, has written six novels, a book of short stories, and a work of non-fiction. He was nominated for a National Book Award and won the Edgar Allen Poe Award for best novel in 2005.

Friends of the Library are sponsoring several related events:
"Pasta and Conversation" with The Cooking Librarian, Jaclyn Strycharz,will take place Thursday, March 13 at 7PM. Ms. Strycharz will give a cooking demonstration and talk about several of her favorite Italian cookbooks, in keeping with the Italian setting of parts of the book.
On Thursday, March 27, at 7PM, Fred Barzyk, a film and television producer and director, will present "Books into TV Movies." He will focus on two TV movies he directed, based on books: The Lathe of Heaven, by Ursula LeGuin and several Kurt Vonnegut books excerpted into his film, Between Time and Timbuktu. Fred Barzyk, has produced and directed television programs for PBS, HBO, NBC, ABC, and CBS.
On Tuesday, April 22, at 7PM, David and Nancy Dillon will give a presentation on traveling in Italy. They will talk about Cinque Terra, on the Ligurian coast, where Beautiful Ruins begins; Florence, Rome, and other Italian locales. The Dillons are schoolteachers who have spent many summers traveling in Europe.
