What is the history of On the Barre? On the Barre opened its door in 2003. Celebrating a decade of dance, On the Barre has since changed ownership in January of 2012. Owner Beth Berman is a former instructor and office manager at On the Barre and additionally was a student of former owner, Angela Beyer.
Beth grew up in Sharon dancing at "A Dancer's World" since the age of 4 and has danced her whole life. She was a competitive dancer since the age of 11 and was a member of the UConn Kickline Team and Kaged Ambition, a Connecticut-based dance troupe, during her undergraduate education at UConn.
On the Barre hosted its ninth annual Spring Dance Recital at Friedman Middle School in Taunton June 10. On the Barre has both recreational and competitive dancers from the ages of 2 to adult.
What classes and programs do you offer? We offer ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, acro, hip-hop, lyrical and adult fitness. We also offer "Tiny Tots" which is a mommy and me class for 2 and 3 year olds, and adult jazz, a beginner jazz course for ages 18 and older.
Additionally, we host birthday parties during the weekends. During the summer, we offer multiple camps and clinics including Hip-Hoppin' & Tumblin' Camp and Ballerina Camp.
Classes for the 2012-2013 dance year start Monday, Sept. 10 and registration is currently open. We also host Music Together, a creative movement and sing-along class for toddlers and young children. Check out

What is your most popular class or program? While it varies from year to year, the most popular classes would probably be hip-hop. We get the best feedback from hip-hop because the kids really get to move, shake and express themselves. Also, we focus on appropriateness of music for these classes, which can unfortunately not be as important at other dance studios. These dances are always a big hit at the recital as well with big energy and loads of smiles!
Do you sell any items? We sell dancewear, shoes and OTB gear as well. We have leotards, tights, ballet skirts, dance shoes for all subjects, OTB bags, sweatshirts, sweatpants, shorts and t-shirts.
What makes On the Barre different from other dance studios? On the Barre is unique in a few ways. For one, we emphasize proper technical and physical development while instilling a love and appreciation for the art form of dance. Whether a student takes one class a week, or takes several and dances competitively, we constantly strive to give each student the best possible training, while still keeping dance fun and fresh!
Our philosophy is to promote a stress-free environment for both parents and dancers. To uphold this philosophy, we have an all-inclusive tuition plan for our students. Unlike other studios where you might pay a large costume bill or recital bill, we break out these payments over the school year. Your monthly tuition pays for regular dance classes in addition to a recital costume, recital t-shirt, two tickets to the recital, recital tights and a recital DVD. Our parents love the fact that they don't have to worry over a lump sum of money due at any point- it is the same bill every month.
A couple of other points of interest at On the Barre are our closed circuit television sets that parents can enjoy watching their children's dance classes on TV. Lastly, parents love our focus on appropriateness of music and costume choices. We hold these values very high and treat our dancers how we would treat our own children, and parents really respond to that.
What is a unique fact about On the Barre that some people might not know? Because of our satisfied custumers, we won WickedLocal.com's Reader's Choice Award for the "#1 Choice for Dance and Gymnastics Schools in Norton" for 2012! We were voted by local residents online. I personally am looking to continue our success in our upcoming dance season.
What do you enjoy about operating a business in Norton? I absolutely love owning and operating a business in Norton! Everyone has been so kind and welcoming. Our customers are truly the best parents and guardians anyone could ask for! They are always willing to help out when needed and the students' attendance rate is always spot on. The students are always respectful and kind to others. It's these little things that make me feel lucky to operate a business in such a caring community.
