The Norton Police are charging James Hines of 120 West Main St. in Norton with assault by means of a dangerous weapon.

The Norton Police are charging James Hines, 79, of 120 West Main St. in Norton with assault by means of a dangerous weapon for allegedly threatening a mail carrier Tuesday at 12:20 p.m. Hines will be appearing in Attleboro District Court at later date.

According the Norton Police, Hines said he meant it as "a joke."

In their report, the Norton Police stated the female mail carrier said Hines allegedly opened up his screen door and pointed the pistol in her direction. According to the police, the mail carrier said she was unsure what type of pistol it was and was able to flee the area and report it to other residents who called the police.

The police said they confiscated two air guns and a .22 caliber handgun from Hines.
