UPDATE: Disc Golf Course Unveiling Postponed

Updated at 10:35 a.m. Thursday: Today's event has been cancelled because of the rain. A new date has not been set yet. We'll let you know when we find out about a new date.

Years in the making, Peabody Disc Golf at Scouting Woods is now a reality.

The nine-hole disc golf course off Summit Street was designed and installed by Explore Disc Golf and is part of a large project that includes a flood mitigation area.

Disc golf is a cross between golf and Frisbee. There is a course and “holes” like golf, but the game is played with a Frisbee.

Explore Disc Golf worked with city of Peabody engineers and outside contractors “to compliment the detention basin that will take up more than half the site,” according to the company.

The detention basin  will help with flood mitigation in the Raymond Circle area

The project needed a recreation component, which was a stipulation when Peabody purchased the land several years ago, and since the detention basin takes up so much of the land, Peabody officials needed to find a recreational usage that didn’t take much space in one area. Enter disc golf.

Explore Disc Golf said the course is designed for newcomers as well as experience disc golfers.

You can get your first look at the new disc golf course on Thursday. City and company officials will be on hand at a ribbon cutting ceremony at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, June 5 at 100 Summit St. The ceremony will be held rain or shine.
