Peabody Girls' Hoops Headed to Playoffs

Peabody High girls' hoops is back on track after a couple straight seasons out of the state tournament bracket.

The Tanners (16-4) are seeded 4th and host No. 13 Methuen (11-9) on Feb. 26 (7 p.m.).

The last time Peabody qualified for the Division I North playoffs was 2010 and the Tanners were cleanly knocked from the tournament in the semi-final by Central Catholic.

The Tanners didn't qualify in 2009, but again from 2006-2008 didn't make it far into the tournament.

Stay tuned for more postseason news on boys' and girls' indoor track, but suffice it to say the boys made a clean sweep in the regular season (7-0) while the girls finished at 5-2, leading up to Saturday's All-State Meet at the Reggie Lewis Center.

The Tanners' swimming and diving team went 6-1-1 in the regular season and competed in the Division I championships on Feb. 18 with the girls placing 34th overall.

Christine Shea picked up the only points (5) for Peabody with 12th in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.03). She then placed 26th in the 200 IM (2:26.78), while Maria Strakosha took 22nd in the 100 butterfly (1:05.73) and 34th in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.09) and the 200 medley relay team did not qualify with its time.

On the boys' side, Alex Strakosha placed 23rd in the 200 IM (2:06.65) and 17th in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.63).

Boys' basketball finished the regular season at 7-13, while boys' ice hockey went 7-12-2, girls' co-op hockey was 5-16, gymnastics 1-7 and wrestling finished at 3-12, all out of the running for the postseason.

Bishop Fenwick girls' basketball (13-7) is also in the playoffs, playing at St. John's Prep Feb. 27 (7 p.m.) for a first round game with Stoneham (12-8). The Crusaders (No. 8) play in Division III of the North tournament.

Crusaders' swimmer Carson Christuk also made a strong showing at the Division II championships on Feb. 18, taking 4th in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.74) and 6th in the 200 IM (2:01.43) to earn all of the team's 28 points for 26th place overall. James Gauthier also finished 21st (1:06.42) in the 100 breast.

On the girls' side, Linsey Andrews finished 29th in the 100 backstroke (1:06.86) and 31st in the 100 freestyle (2:10.71), while Bridgette Townsend finished 24th in the 200 IM (2:30.44) and 34th in the 100 backstroke (1:08.97).

Fenwick boys' hoops finished at 6-12, while boys' ice hockey went 4-16-2 and the girls' team went 0-16. Results were not immediately available for the gymnastics team, but stay tuned for results for Fenwick at Saturday's All-State Meet.
