Lynn Community Health Center to Receive Recognition at MSPP Annual Gala on May 7, 2015

MSPP recognizes the dedication of the Lynn community to provide its residents with optimal health and mental health care

The Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology(MSPP), a leader in educating mental health professionals and the largest graduate psychology program in New England, will hold its 2015 Annual Galaon May 7 at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel at 6 p.m. At the gala, MSPP will formally announce that it is becoming William James College, recognizing the school’s evolution over the past 40 years to an institution with 900 students, faculty and staff and a network of 1,750 alumni. The gala will also honor the Lynn Community Health Center and its founder, the late Stephen Hayes, Psy.D., a distinguished alumnus of MSPP, who revolutionized mental health treatment in the Lynn community. Hayes’ legacy speaks to the gala’s theme of “Advancing Mental Health Together.”

Hayes was a psychotherapist, health psychologist, a brilliant administrator and a remarkable social change agent. He grew the Lynn Community Health Center from a small storefront mental health clinic in 1971 into a center providing primary care, dental care, behavioral health, eye care, pharmacy services, and social services to more than 39,000 patients at 20 locations in Lynn today. The center will be recognized for the work it has done in showcasing that caring for mental health is just as important as caring for physical health.

“Recognizing the need to bring psychology into primary care, Stephen improved the quality of treatment received by patients of the Lynn Community Health Center,” said Dr. Nicholas Covino, President of MSPP. “He served Lynn with a passion and zeal that I hope all of our students will look up to as they work in communities near and far.”
