Man Hospitalized After 'Serious' Car Crash on Rt 128

An elderly male was taken to the hospital Wednesday night with serious injuries after his car crashed on Route 128.

Initial reports said the car -- a Honda Accord -- had rolled over on the highway, but later unofficial accounts contradicted that.

The accident was first called in shortly before 9 p.m., according to reports, and occurred on the southbound side of the highway near Exit 25A, which leads onto Route 114 eastbound. The location is at a bridge that runs over the highway.

Route 128 was shut down to southbound traffic shortly after police and firefighters arrived at the scene. The lefthand lane on the northbound side was also closed to traffic.

In a media alert at 9:15 p.m., state police characterized the accident as a "serious motor vehicle crash" and said both southbound lanes were closed to traffic. Troopers were on the scene, reconstructing the accident.

As of 9:20 p.m., southbound traffic was being detoured off Exit 25B, westbound on Route 114, but was backed up to Endicott Street (Exit 24).

According to reports, an 84-year-old man was freed from the vehicle and taken to Lahey Clinic by ambulance. Reports say he suffered serious injuries.
