PMLP GM Glenn Trueira Elected Director of Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company

Peabody Municipal Light Plant Commissioner Robert O. Wheatley is recipient of service award

Peabody Municipal Light Plant General Manager Glenn Trueira was recently elected as director of the Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company to complete the unexpired term of former Director Philip W. Sweeney, who passed away in May.

Members of the Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company elected Trueira on Oct. 30.

Trueira’s election gives the board a full complement of directors, including six other elected representatives of MMWEC member utilities, two gubernatorial appointees and three directors representing the towns of Ludlow, Wilbraham and Hampden.

The Peabody municipal utility, established in 1891, serves approximately 25,000 customers in Peabody and South Lynnfield.

Peabody Municipal Light Plant Commissioner Robert O. Wheatley is the recipient of Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company first annual Philip W. Sweeney Public Service Award, which recognizes exceptional service to the public or in the public arena that advances the goals of public power.

Wheatley, an elected Peabody commissioner since 1997, served three years as chairman and three years as vice-chairman of the commission during his tenure, which has spanned a period of deregulation and dramatic change in the electric industry. 

Trueira delivered a message from Wheatley’s fellow commissioner, Tom Paras, who recognized Wheatley’s service to

Peabody, “I have served for 11 years with Bob and I cannot think of anyone more deserving,” Paras stated. “All the time I have served alongside Bob, he has always focused on the public’s interest while fulfilling his responsibility for administration of the Peabody Municipal Light Plant.” 

The Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company, through a public energy partnership established in 1969, provides the services, expertise and strategic vision to help municipal utilities optimize their energy resources and find value in the shifting structure of New England’s wholesale power markets.

In 1976, Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company became a non-profit, public corporation and political subdivision of Massachusetts that is empowered to issue tax-exempt revenue bonds to finance ownership interests in energy facilities. There are 21 Massachusetts municipal utilities that are members of the organization and 28 are participants in Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company Power Supply Projects.
