Peabody police and a state police air wing are searching for an elderly woman this morning in the east end of Peabody near the Salem line.

Police said 85-year-old Violet Newey, who lives at 8 Davis Ter., was last seen around 10 p.m. Thursday at her home. Hewey has a history of Alzheimer's and lives with her husband.

Police Capt. Dennis Bonaiuto said the husband called police around 10:30 a.m. Friday to her report as missing. He told police he last saw her heading up to her bedroom and then awoke in the morning to find her gone.

Bonaiuto said Newey apparently likes to go walking and possibly covered a lot of ground in the time between Thursday night and Friday morning.

Newey is described as 5-5 and 160 pounds with light gray hair. She was wearing an LSW blue sweater (possibly a turtleneck) and a blue pair of pants last night.

Police began combing the area immediately after the initial report and called in the department's K-9 unit to assist, along with state police helicopters.

An alert to the public via Nixle was issued around 12:30 p.m. and Newey's photo was released shortly thereafter.

Salem police is also working locating Newey -- reports have come in Friday morning and afternoon of possible sightings in the downtown area of Salem. Bonaiuto had not received notice of those reports yet and could not confirm.

Anyone with information on her whereabouts should call Peabody police at 978-531-1212 as soon as possible.
