[Editor's Note: We were remiss initially in not explaining the unusually high income for food services director in 2012. Janyce Harkins retired in October after 40 years with the Peabody Public Schools. Her actual salary for the job was $51,243, but she also received $52,740 in other earnings for 2012, which was due to an accumulation of unused sick days, vacation days or other benefits she was entitled to under her contract.]
We reported Tuesday who the overall top earners were on the city payroll for 2012, and today we take a look specifically at what Peabody school employees took home last year.
The incomes in the chart below, which lists the top 50 earners for the School Department, represent gross income, which would include salaries, longevity bonuses, stipends and other compensation.
Two people you'll notice missing from their usual spots on the list are the superintendent of schools and high school principal.
That's because Interim Superintendent Herb Levine stepped down mid-year as Joe Mastrocola came on-board as the new superintendent and Ed Sapienza retired mid-year.
Levine earned $103,412 (he also received stipends for other temporary positions he filled during the year elsewhere in the city) while Mastrocola earned $83,700.
Although Sapienza was hired back as an interim principal, he can only earn a percentage of his former salary due to his retirement (pension). He was paid $77,469 in 2012.
