Hazmat Situation Due To Strong Odor At Silver Lake High School
UPDATE: Dozens of staff and students receive medical treatment.at local hospitals; basketball games vs. Plymouth North postponed.

PLYMOUTH, MA — Emergency crews from several South Shore towns responded to Silver Lake High School in Kingston late Friday morning. The mutual-aid system Plymouth County Control reported there was a "Tier 1 Haz-Mat" situation at the school with 33 patients receiving medical treatment.
Pembroke, Duxbury, Plympton, and Halifax ambulances responded to the scene and Pembroke engine responded to Kingston for station coverage. The scene was declared a Level 3 MCI (mass casualty incident).

Silver Lake Principal Michaela Gill issued a letter to parents and guardians telling them a staff member reported feeling ill due to a strong odor in one of the classrooms about 10 a.m. She said Kingston police and fire were called and did not initially recommend evacuating the building, but that some classes were relocated to the auditorium while the odor was investigated.

The State Fire Marshal later called for an evacuation.
"Out of an abundance of caution any student who reported feeling nauseous was evaluated by medical personnel," she wrote late Friday morning. "We are working with police and fire to monitor the situation and will provide updates as soon as we can."

Athletic events planned for the school Friday night have been postponed.

WFXT-TV reported that students and staff were taken to three area hospitals for treatment.
