Today is Wednesday, Dec. 13, and here are the five things you need to know:
1. It should be another pleasant day in Salem. The National Weather Service is predicting that local residents can expect it to be sunny, with a high near 42. Tonight should be mostly clear, with a low around 35. (sunrise, 7:05 a.m.; high tide, 10:24 a.m.; sunset, 4:10 p.m.; low tide, 4:48 p.m.)
2. An online fundraising effort to save CinemaSalem that kicked off earlier this month is within $7,000 of reaching its goal and gaining momentum. Theater Owner Paul Van Ness has enlisted the help of Kickstarter, an online fundraising platform, in the hopes of raising the $60,000 needed to buy digital projectors.
3. Need a nice local story to lift your spirits this holiday season? A local man who accidentally left his Christmas shopping money in a shoulder bag on the roof of his car and drove off had it returned to him by a woman who found it in the middle of the road. 5. Today in History: On Dec. 13, 2003, former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was captured near his home town of Tikrit.
