Salem High School To Honor Local Veterans

Local veterans will be honored with medals as part of the annual Veterans Day ceremony at Salem High School on Friday.

Original wartime service medals were given to returning soldiers after World War I as a symbol of gratitude and appreciation from the citizens of Salem.

The ceremony continues to this day.

"The medal was first presented to returning Doughboys from Salem after WWI and last Veterans Day ; we had 55 show up," Post Commander Kim Emerling recalls.

The City of Salem and the  will honor local veterans during the annual Veterans Day ceremony on Friday at . Vietnam War veterans and any remaining WWII and Korean War veterans will be recognized by the citizens of Salem.

To date, 130 medals have been presented to Salem veterans.

Emerling says "as the guy that just puts the list together, I get to hear quit a few great war stories. These men and women carry on the city's great military history that started back in 1626 when the muster was held on Salem Common."

The ceremony will be held on this Veterans Day, Friday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. in the Salem High School Auditorium.
