The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police Department's log: 


Monday, April 28

  • At 3:59 p.m., police responded to an unleashed dog complaint on Ord Street.
  • At 4:19 p.m., police responded to a report of past threats on Rainbow Terrace.
  • At 4:35 p.m., police responded to a shoplifting incident at the Target on Higland Avenue. Jaime L. Stavros, 31, of 50 Warren St., Peabody, was arrested on a charge of shoplifting merchandise by concealment.
  • At 4:46 p.m., police responded to a report of a possibly injured raccoon on Naples Road.
  • At 5:04 p.m., a weapon was surrendered on Lafayette Street.
  • At 5:09 p.m., police responded to a shoplifting incident at Steve's Market on Margin Street. The owner told police that a man left the store with a pound of cheese without paying for it. Donald C. Grant, 68, of 286 Washington St., Salem, was arrested for reportedly having an outstanding warrant.
  • At 5:17 p.m., police responded to a report of fresh vandalism on Essex Street.
  • At 5:56 p.m., police conducted a well-being check on Emerton Street.
  • At 6:53 p.m., police conducted a well-being check on North Street. A woman was placed into protective custody.
  • At 7:10 p.m., police conducted a well-being check on Margin Street.
  • At 7:13 p.m., police responded to a domestic dispute on Essex Street. Kathleen M. O'Hara, 59, of 46 Essex St., Salem, was arrested on charges of assault and battery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (cordless phone).
  • At 7:15 p.m., police issued a no trespass order at The Lincoln Hotel on Lafayette Street.
  • At 7:33 p.m., police responded to a dispute on Fowler Street.
  • At 7:49 p.m., police responded to a domestic dispute on Heritage Drive.
  • At 10:20 p.m., police responded to a domestic dispute on Lafayette Street.
  • At 10:30 p.m., police made an arrest on Osborne Street. Carlos M. Taveras, 29, of 22 Osborne St., Salem, was arrested for reportedly having an outstanding warrant.

Tuesday, April 29

  • At 12:41 a.m., police responded to a report of suspicious activity on Heritage Drive.
  • At 12:42 a.m., police responded to a report of past malicious damage to a motor vehicle on Grove Street.
  • At 4:14 a.m., police responded to a noise complaint on Kosciusko Street. Margret R. Gallant, 18, of 19 Kosciuszko St., Salem, was arrested on a charge of disturbing the peace.
  • At 11:01 a.m., an anonymous caller tipped police off to a man with a warrant on Loring Avenue. Daniel L. Mejia, 27, of 14 Abbott St., Salem, was arrested for reportedly having an outstanding warrant.
  • At 11:50 a.m., police responded to a report of a suspicious package on Hawthorne Boulevard.
  • At 12:08 p.m., police responded to a report of two dogs struck by a motor vehicle near the intersection of Boston and Proctor streets.
  • At 12:17 p.m., an officer disposed of a hypodermic needle discovered in a flower box on Winthrop Street.
  • At 12:21 p.m., a Ward Street man entered the police station to report that his car was stolen overnight.
  • At 1:45 p.m., a Dearborn Street resident entered the police station lobby to turn over weapons and ammunition.
  • At 2:03 p.m., an officer disposed of a hypodermic needle discovered near the intersection of Mason and Oak streets.
  • At 2:08 p.m., police were called to the Starbucks on Washington Street after staff members reported a man in the bathroom "banging and making guitar sounds." A man told police he was just using the bathroom and went on his way.
  • At 2:29 p.m., police responded to a domestic dispute on First Street.
  • At 2:40 p.m., police made an arrest following a traffic stop on Norman Street. Joseph T. Lewis, 25, of 35 Lynn St., Peabody, was arrested on a charge of illegally possessing a class A substance (heroin).
  • At 2:58 p.m., police responded to a domestic dispute on Derby Street. 
  • At 3:57 p.m., police responded to a domestic dispute on March Street.

Other Arrests

Sharon L. Dube, 45, of 1000 Loring Ave., Salem, was arrested on a charge of violating an abuse prevention order.

Samantha F. Chaletzky, 21, of 16 Phillips St., Salem, was arrested on a charge of domestic assault and battery.
