Salem Zoning Board to Discuss Urban Chickens Tonight

The Salem Zoning Board of Appeals will discuss the future of urban chicken coops at their meeting Wednesday night.

Believe it or not - there are more than a few urban chicken coops in Salem.

The video above was shot last summer on Dearborn Street, where Maura Murphy proudly keeps her coop.

At tonight's meeting of the Salem Zoning Board of Appeals, board members will consider an administrative appeal of a decision made by the Building Commissioner regarding the agricultural use of the property at 69 Orchard St., according to the posted  agenda.

The appeal calls for revoking the Building Commissioner's previous ruling that flocks of chickens can be considered pets and are not necessarily part of an agricultural business.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. on the third floor of the City Hall Annex on Washington Street.
