Sharon Senator: Explore Bringing NASCAR to Massachusetts
James Timilty was inspired by the success of the New Hampshire Motor Speedway and filed legislation that would explore the possibility of bringing NASCAR to the Bay State.
"Given the enormous popularity of the sport across the country and here in Massachusetts as well, it is worthwhile to have a solid understanding of what the costs and benefits might be to the Commonwealth," Timilty said in a statement. "The New Hampshire Motor Speedway has incredible success in hosting NASCAR races and I think it is important to take a look at the possibility of attracting those tourist dollars and other associated revenues to Massachusetts."
Timilty, a Walpole resident, introduced an amendment to the Senate's economic development bill that directs the Massachusetts Sports Partnership to compile a report about the possibility of Massachusetts hosting a NASCAR race.
The report would be due on July 1, 2015. It would explore potential host venues, costs and revenues, and how local laws or ordinances would affect such an event.
