Bicyclist Arrested Near Union Square
The bicyclist allegedly ran a red light and then refused to identify himself to a police officer.
A bicyclist was arrested near Union Square in Somerville on Tuesday morning, July 22, after he allegedly ran a red light at Washington Street and Webster Avenue and then refused to identify himself to a police officer.
Matthew Szklarz, 28, of 59 Munroe St., Somerville, was arrested at about 9:10 a.m. on Webster Avenue and charged with bicyclist refusing to identify self and cited for the red-light violation.
According to the officer, Szklarz did not stop when signaled. The officer said he had to put his body in front of Szklarz bicycle, and he said Szklarz was “immediately hostile and uncooperative.”

When the officer asked Szklarz for his name, Szklarz allegedly said he did not have to give it. The officer then told Szklarz he would be arrested if he did not give his name, according to the police report. Szkalrz allegedly told the officer, “You can’t do that.”
The officer then warned Szklarz twice more that he would be arrested if he did not give his name, and, after Szklarz continued to stand in silence with his arms crossed, the officer arrested him, according to the police report.
