Contractors Sought for Green Line Extension Project: MassDOT

The MBTA is seeking interest from firms ahead of the next phase of its project.

The MBTA is currently seeking letters of interest from contractors as it prepares to begin the next phase of the Green Line Extension project.

On November 16, transit officials will host a forum to discuss the current status and scope of the project, and plans to invite firms capable of leading Design Build teams.

This next phase includes the design and construction of two distinct branches -- a "mainline" branch operating within the right-of-way of the Lowell Line, beginning south of a relocated Lechmere Station in Cambridge and traveling north to Medford, and a second branch operating within the existing right-of-way of the Fitchburg Line to Union Square in Somerville.

As part of the project, seven new stations will be constructed, including the new Lechmere Station, electrical and signal systems will be installed and a vehicle storage and maintenance facility will be built.

A number of cost and planning benchmarks have been reached so far in the GLX project, though it still hangs on the release of $1 billion pledged by the federal government, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

This year, Federal Transit Administration Regional Administrator Mary Beth Mello wrote to MassDOT Secretary Stephanie Pollack in support of the work performed by the project's Interim Project Management Team, according to a MassDOT release.

As transit officials plan to move forward, contractors are asked to submit letters of interest to the MBTA.
