Somerville firefighters responded to 39 Church St. shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday for a report of a house fire.
Once there, they found that an electrical fire in the residence’s second-floor kitchen had spread across the ceiling and into the attic, according to an email from the department.
Firefighters had to pull down the kitchen ceiling and several walls and cut a number of holes in the attic floor and roof to extinguish the flames.
Seven adults and one child have been displaced by the fire, and it caused about $75,000 worth of damage, according to the department.
The residence is a 2.5-story home with two apartments.
