McGrath Highway Repairs Begin July 23

Repairs to the McCarthy overpass of McGrath Highway are set to begin next week, according to an announcement from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

Many in Somerville would , without the state spending money to repair it before, eventually, taking it down.

Here's the announcement from MassDOT:

SOMERVILLE – ROUTE 28 (MCGRATH HIGHWAY) OVER WASHINGTON STREET AND MEDFORD STREET – MCCARTHY OVERPASS REPAIR WORK STARTS JULY 23RD

Beginning on Monday, July 23 work crews will implement necessary structural repairs to portions of the McCarthy Overpass carrying Route 28 (McGrath Highway) over Washington Street and Medford Street in Somerville.

The repair work is needed to address deteriorated elements of the structurally deficient bridge to allow its continued use until permanent reconstruction of the McGrath Highway corridor and removal of the McCarthy Overpass occur.

The repair work will primarily occur on weekdays between 7:00 AM and 3:30 PM with no lane closures.

Appropriate signs, channelizing devices and traffic control measures will be used to guide drivers through the work zone.
