Lawrence F. Mahoney, 87, a resident of Somerville who was born and raised in Charlestown, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family after a long illness on Saturday, March 15, 2014.
Beloved husband of 59 years to Emma L. (Laidler). Loving father of Lawrence F. Mahoney Jr. and his wife Sandra of Bentonville, Ark., Louise Mahoney-Scullari and Mary Mahoney, both of Stoneham.
Brother of Evelyn Nighelli of Norton, Jean Fothergill of Wilmington and the late Arthur Mahoney and Dorothy Maguire. Brother-in-law of Edward F. Holmes of Stoneham and Marie Laidler of Medford.
Dear grandfather of Matthew and Mark Scullari, Caitlin and Brendan Mahoney. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Funeral procession from the George L. Doherty Funeral Home, 855 Broadway, Powder House Square, Somerville, Tuesday morning at 8:45 a.m. followed by a funeral mass in St. Mary Church, Charlestown, at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends invited.

Mr. Mahoney was a retired Somerville firefighter, late member of the Charlestown School Boys, L Street Bath House, Cambridge YMCA and Boston Athletic Club, where he was an avid handball player. He was a great fan of all Boston sports teams, particularly the B.C. Eagles. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving proudly during the Korean War and was appointed Honorary Special Agent of the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office in 2013.
During his retirement, Mr. Mahoney and his wife enjoyed time in Palm Beach, Fla., where he was a member of the Palm Beach Jewish Community Center and the Palm Beach Elks.
