Stoneham Patch Whiz Kid of the Week
- Michael Cappuccio, 18
- Accomplishment: Cappuccio, a left winger for the boys' hockey team, netted 11 goals last season to go along with 10 assists.
Key to Awesomeness: Cappuccio and the Spartans have a 2-2-1 record after five games in a competitive Middlesex League. Cappuccio is off to a fast start for the Spartans with four points (one goal, three assists) through five games.
When asked why he was successful on the ice, Cappuccio responded simply because of his love for the game.
“Hockey is my true passion and there is nothing I would rather be doing,” Cappuccio said. “When I am on the ice playing or just practicing, I am just focused and nothing else matters.”
“I just love the game. Since I was six I wanted to skate all the time.”
Cappuccio works hard at practice to improve his overall game, especially his speed on the ice.
“The team works on lots of drills offensively and defensively, puck strength and stick handling, passing and shooting,” Cappuccio said. “I really like to work on improving my speed because I think that is the key to being a skilled player.”
After coming off a 21-point season last year, Cappuccio wants to improve his game so the team will be better and advance in the State tournament.
“I want to better my goals and assists from last year but most importantly, I want the team to play well enough to make it to the tournament this year and win,” Cappuccio said.
Cappuccio is a leader on the ice and he plans to lead the team throughout the entire season.
“I will try to lead by example to get the best from everyone,” Cappuccio said. “I will work with the freshmen and help them with the level of play that comes with high school hockey.”
Cappuccio insists that he needs to make his teammates better on the ice this season and he will do that through perseverance.
“I try to give 100 percent on every shift, work hard at practice and push them to (do) the same,” Cappuccio said. “I never give up, not even for one second. You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take.”
