The following is from a press release from Kids Voting Stoughton:

The Kids Voting Stoughton Steering Committee is pleased to announce the winners of the 2012 Kids Voting Stoughton Bookmark Contest.

From the Gibbons School - Zachary Ian Feist, age 7 and Olivia Tran, age 6; from the Dawe School - Victoria Fontes, age 11, Haley Nelson, age 8 and Alexis DePina, age 10; and from the West School - Kylie Flynn, age 9.

Judges for the contest were Kids Voting Steering Committee Members Marylou Giordano, Dolores Cummings and Amne Parsons.

The contest, promoted through the Stoughton Pennysaver, Stoughton Public Library and the Stoughton Public Schools, yielded many entries this year.

“It is heartening to see such enthusiasm in the kids and their families for this great program,” said Sharon Fradkin, Steering Committee Co-Chair. “This is the 5th Bookmark Contest for the program and each time it’s apparent that the winners feel honored."

These bookmarks will soon be available for patrons at the Stoughton Public Library. Copies of the bookmarks are posted in the media gallery.

Certificates will be awarded to the winners at the first night of Town Meeting, Monday, May 7, thanks to the indulgence of the Town Meeting Reps and Town Moderator Howard Hansen.

“Seeing our town government in action is yet another important civics experience for these kids and their families,” Fradkin continued.

This year as a special treat, it is expected that Stoughton's State Senator Brian Joyce and State Representatives Lou Kafka and Bill Galvin will present House and Senate proclamations to each student.

The Kids Voting Stoughton program is gearing up for the 2012 November election where kids will have the unique opportunity of using a specially designed civics curriculum provided by Kids Voting USA and taught by their own Stoughton teachers.

The Kids Voting program is a K-12 curriculum that culminates in an actual voting experience at all precinct polling locations. The bookmark contest kicks off the civics agenda in anticipation of the upcoming Presidential election in November.
