Stoughton High Volleyball Serves Up Another Win

The Stoughton High volleyball team improves to 2-1 with a straight-sets win over Taunton Thursday at home.

Trailing 9-2 in the second set of Thursday's home match against Taunton, the rode strong serves from Jalen Joseph and Emma Zuk to help turn the seven point deficit into a 22-13 lead.

The were able to close out the set, going up two sets to none, before ultimately coming away with a straight sets, 3-0 sweep against Taunton, one of two new schools in the Hockomock League this season.

Stoughton won the first set 25-17, the aforementioned second set 25-16 and the final set 25-21.

Tied at 20 in the third set, following four straight Taunton points, Stoughton won five of the final six points to take the match.

It wasn't the prettiest win - Stoughton jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first set but Taunton was able to tie the set at 15, scoring five of its first seven points on Stoughton errors before Stoughton pulled away with a decisive 10-2 run; and the Tigers built the seven-point lead to start the second set - but Coach Ken Gay will still take it.

"Good teams have to learn to win when they're not playing their best," Gay said. "We hung in there long enough to get the win in the first set [and did the] same in he second set."

With the win, Stoughton improves to 2-1 on the season, bouncing back from Tuesday's 3-0 road loss at Franklin.

Against Taunton, Zuk, a senior captain, led the way with 19 assists, 11 digs and four aces.

Fellow senior captain Gabby Medina turned in 16 digs, while senior captain Lauren Carmichael had 10 digs and three aces.

Nicole Daniels had 11 kills and Kayla Motley added eight more kills. Joseph had three aces.

Stoughton next travels to Sharon on September 20 for its first Hockomock League Davenport Division match of the young season.
