Stoughton Public Schools CLOSED Friday, February 8 for Snowstorm

Students in Stoughton will have an unexpected long weekend.

In advance of Friday's projected blockbuster snowstorm, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Marguerite Rizzi informed Stoughton Patch that schools will be closed in Stoughton on Friday, Feb. 8, 2013.

Dr. Rizzi announced the decision shortly after 11:30 a.m. on Thursday.

"In the latest MEMA conference call they asked for all cars [to be] off the roads by 11 [Friday morning]. That ruled out the half day I had hoped to get in. Safety first," Dr. Rizzi wrote in a text message.

According to the National Weather Service, "snow should start early Friday morning, become strongest Friday evening, then taper off Saturday...Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are possible."

The National Weather Service forecasts about 2 feet of snow.

The Stoughton area is under a blizzard warning from Friday morning until Saturday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

This is projected to be the heaviest snowfall the area has seen since January of 2011.

While this is the first "snow day" of the 2012-2013 school year, the Stoughton Schools had a weather related closing on Oct. 29, 2012 due to Hurricane Sandy, so this will be the second weather-related closing of the school year.
