U.S. Rep. Markey Says He'll Run for Kerry's Senate Seat

After hinting that he'd make a run for Sen. John Kerry's seat should he be tabbed to be Secretary of State, U.S. Rep. Ed Markey will run for Senate in 2013, according to a Boston Globe report.

Markey, 66, is the first prominent candidate to announce he'll make a bid for Kerry's seat, which will be filled through a special election next summer, according to the Boston Globe.

On Dec. 17 Congressman Markey told reporters at Malden City Hall that he'd "seriously consider" vying for Kerry's Senate seat.

Meanwhile, Kerry, a Democrat and head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is expected to be confirmed by the Senate in the coming weeks as the next head of the State Department, according to the Boston Globe.

Two other Bay State congressmen, Michael Capuano of Somerville, and Stephen Lynch of South Boston, both Democrats, have also expressed interest in seeking Kerry’s seat, reports the Boston Globe.
