Sudbury Fifth Grader Awarded $1,000 Grand Prize for Watercolor Poster
Peter Noyes Elementary School student Anisha Kundu won the contest sponsored by AAA Southern New England.
The Sudbury resident was selected recently as the grand prize winner of the AAA Southern New England's Traffic Safety Message Contest.
Thanks to her hand-drawn ink and watercolor poster, Kundu was given a $1,000 prize. More than 1,000 students entered the contest from Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island.
Judges included traffic safety professionals and visitors to the AAA website. Kundu's poster received over 200 votes through the online voting.
The 11-year-old's poster was used to remind driver to "Keep a Safe Distance," as it showed pedestrians and a school bus in traffic.
"Kundu’s advice on keeping a safe distance is a key element to defensive driving and traffic safety," AAA said when announcing the award. "Most rear end collisions are caused by the vehicle in back following too closely; speed and distracted driving increase the risk of collisions. Few motorists keep the recommended following distance while driving, having a tendency to tailgate."
This was the 70th year AAA Southern New England has held the poster contest in an effort to reduce traffic related fatalities.
