Local Poet To Present at Massachusetts Poetry Festival In Salem!

Local Poet To Present at Massachusetts Poetry Festival In Salem!

The first weekend in May brings the Massachusetts Poetry Festival, well known for not only a stunning variety of poets, and their works, but a commitment to inclusion. This year, the Festival, held in Salem will feature a reading program on Sunday, May 4th, highlighting the poetry of special needs families.

Behind Every One...A Poetic Celebration of Special Needs Families

1:00 PM - 2:00 PM, May 4 2014

Peabody Essex Museum, Bartlett Gallery

Salem MA

A presentation of poetry written by the families and friends of Special Needs kids and adults. Join us for a  heart felt journey, the culmination of an outreach to families all over Massachusetts, resulting in a unique forum giving voice to a rich, lively culture, frequently overlooked, and under sung. We invite you to experience our reality, minus the "short bus thinking" that so often underscores notions and ideas about what we, and our children are about. Come listen to words, thoughts, ideas and feelings for a glimpse into a world at once individual, but essentially linked to your own. Behind Every One is a circle of family, friends, teachers, care givers---each it’s own story, each its own poem. Come hear our words...and share our lives!

The panelists will include Ipswich poet and children’s advocate Lisa Golda- Shields, North Shore parent and poet M. W. MacKay,  Poet and Educator Jessie Diamond, and Salem State undergrad and writer, Desiree A. Shields.

Families, teachers, and care givers of the special needs community are invited to contact lisagoldashields@gmail.com if they wish to contribute poems or prose to be read at the event.  The deadline for submitted work is May 1st, and all rights are reserved to the authors. Join us…and give voice to your experience!
