The hockey game had hard checking, shots on goal and solid play from both goalies.
The game had end-to-end play, glass-shaking hits and the packed crowd on its feet.
It had the excitement that Marblehead/Swampscott contests generate.
And in the end it had a tie score, 2-2.
In the final minutes of the final period, Nunzio Morretti of Swampscott redirected a puck past Marblehead goalie Mike Harper.
That made the score 2-2.
But throughout the game at Salem State's O'Keefe Center, Harper turned away point-blank shots.
"Mike Harper played real well in net," Marblehead Coach Bob Jackson said.
The Magicians grabbed the early lead on a score by Trevor Jones.
Swampscott's Trevor, Trevor Massey, tied the game at 1-1.
Marblehead went ahead 2-1 on a blast by Ty Bates.
Swampscott goalie Patrick Sheehan may have been screened on the shot.
Throughout the game Sheehan held his place in the crease and turned away repeated Marblehead shots. In the second half of the second period he denied a half dozen Marblehead scoring chances.
Coach Gino Faia praised his work.
The 2-2 tie secured the conference championship for Marblehead.
Swampscott came in second, a point back at this point.
Their regular season is done. Marblehead has two games to play.
Both teams are tournament bound. Their seedings and opponents are yet to be determined.
Both coaches are happy with the hockey their teams are playing as they skate toward the Division 3 tournament.
