Ground Broken for Bank

St. Mary's Credit Union's Westborough branch will open in 2013.

Ground Broken for Bank

Ground was broken today at a new bank at the intersection of routes 9 and 30 in Westborough that will participate in two big events in 2013.

The opening of St. Mary’s Credit Union’s newest branch, and the celebration of St. Mary’s 100th anniversary, Vice President of Marketing Anthony Battista said during the ceremony.

The Westborough branch will open at 96 Turnpike Road, where Friendly's operated a restaurant before filing for bankruptcy in October 2011.

“Oftentimes, we like to see green development on top of property that hasn’t been developed previously, because it increases our property taxes. But, in a lot of cases, it’s a lot better to see redevelopment such as this, where a property was let go into some decline,” Town Manager Jim Malloy said.

“And in this particular location, with a new building here, and a new development here, and the redevelopment of the property right across the street, it greatly enhances the visual impact of this intersection. And we’re looking forward to St. Mary’s being a member of our business community.”

Corridor Nine Chamber of Commerce President Barbara Clifford said St. Mary’s Credit Union “made a really fine choice of where to open” its newest branch.

The site is “such a central, prime, amazing location (that) looks nothing like it did when there was a Friendly’s here,” Clifford said.

St. Mary’s Chairman of the Board Gerard Richer said the bank’s mission is to “provide the best possible service to our members.”

“We think this location will enable us to enhance the service that we provide to our existing members” and also serve Westborough-area residents, Richer said.

The bank is expected to open in mid-2013, bank officials have said.

The roughly 3,000-square-foot branch "includes a drive-up service window, a drive-up ATM, a coin counting machine, a night deposit box and a distinctive tower that will serve as a landmark at the busy intersection of routes 9 and 30," bank officials have said.
