For Wilmington hockey players, it's been a year to remember on the ice. And for a handful of Wildcat skaters, the memories continued to grow last weekend.

On Sunday, the Northeast Bay State Games team, led by five Wilmington players, snagged a shootout victory over the Metro team to earn a 5-4 gold medal win.

Cam Owens, whose this spring helped bring home the , was among the Wilmington skaters on the Northeast team. Owens was joined by linemate Jake Rogers along with Anthony and Joe Castellano and Cam Collins.

“A lot of tournaments that you play in, you’re playing with people from all over the place," Owens said in an article on ESPNBoston.com. "Here, I get to play with all of my teammates, you’re playing for your region and that’s kind of cool... Even the guys from other teams, you know a lot of them from playing against them during the [high school] season. Now, you get to play with them and get to know them.”

The Northeast team opened up Bay State play on Thursday, July 12, with an 8-7 victory over the Southeast team. The following day, the team eased past Central, 4-1.

That victory set up the first of two games against Metro. The first game on Saturday, July 14, went to Northeast, 6-3, before the Wilmington-led squad went on to the dramatic win the next day.

“It’s a good time, good friends and good hockey,” Owens told ESPNBoston.com. “This has been a great experience.”
