Wilmington Veterans Day Ceremony Set for Friday

Festivities slated for 11:11 a.m. on Town Common.

Wilmington Veterans Day Ceremony Set for Friday

Wilmington has a long history of support for the town’s members of the armed forces. On Friday, that support will be on full display with a Veterans Day ceremony.

The town hosts festivities at 11:11 a.m. on Town Common, with several speakers and a short march to the venue from the 4th of July Building parking lot scheduled. A newly formed firing squad will be in uniform and using rifles from the local VFW to perform the volley of three.

“Wilmington is second to none when it comes to supporting its veterans,” said Veterans’ Agent Louis Cimaglia. “The support for veterans and those serving overseas is amazing. The crowds we get and the donations we get – the fact that we’ve been able to do Local Heroes for seven years speaks volumes about this town. It’s humbling to be honest with you.”

Similar events, such as the , have drawn large crowds to Town Common.

Though there was rain in the area on Thursday, conditions are expected to cooperate with just a 30 percent chance of morning showers slated for Friday.

“The weather is going to be good, although I had nothing to do with that,” joked Cimaglia.

The Veterans’ Agent said ceremonies like today’s help keep soldiers’ morale high when their heroics are sometimes overlooked.

“Their chest is stuck out a little more and they have a bit more pep in their step today, as there should be,” said Cimaglia. “I always invite people to take a few minutes out of their day to salute veterans and thank them. Not just on Veterans Day, but every day.”
